Happy Belated Fourth of July everyone!
Actually by Dracana Standard Time it's still the fourth because I haven't gone to bed and waken up yet but whatever.
You know sitting here listening to the occasional firecracker or firework still going off it got me wondering when the city and county officials are going to learn that just because you say it's dangerous to use fireworks doesn't mean people aren't going to do it. Even after many years of fireworks being banned in our county the 4th of July is synonomous with blowing colorful things up. Every year they still get coming into the hospital because they decided it would be a really great idea to hang onto the roman candle after they lit it. Every year the fire department still has to answer a call or two to put out someone's house. In short the ban is about as effective as the war on drugs.
Fortunately the way I see it there is a very easy and cheap solution to this problem. Instead of making everyone go to a big crowded celebration on the edge of the city to see fireworks, make smaller designated points for people to go to so they can set off their own legally again. Where I live most of the people setting off fireworks are not dark and shady criminals, they are parents with their kids. All you need is a couple of cops, firefighters and/or paramedics to keep an eye on things and prevent drunk or drugged people from trying to participate and a large empty spot like the parking lot of a local supermarket or mall. The city could make more money by selling the fireworks right there, the kids and parents get to see fireworks without having to worry about police patrols and fines and the cops, firefighters and/or paramedics know where to be if something goes wrong. Hey they're gonna do it anyway so why not have control over it.
In other news I've noticed this weird trend in myself that now that I have money to maintain my Horizons (now Istaria) subscription I actually play less that ever. Not that this is totally bad since I've been doing other stuff like drawring and writing and getting stuff done around the house. I still am a loyal gamer and love the game but I've felt less of an absolute need to play the game. Weird.
Anyway, that's all for me for tonight

WOOHOO! It's over My long period of being jobless is over! I have money now! Or at least I will when the time comes for me to receive my first paycheck. Yes I have finally managed to land a job and a decent one at that. No it doesn't pay a whole lot. It's minimum wage ($9.36 in San Francisco) for 21 hours of work a week but it's in a place I like with people I like and involves something I like to do. I am officially the graphic artist for Precita Eyes Muralists. I have been volunteering there for several years but only recently has this come up. I probably could have gotten it to happen sooner but since Precita Eyes is a struggling non-profit I didn't want to argue for something that from the way I saw it was unlikely to happen because of the organizations lack of money. It still is a struggling non-profit and ever since the asshole publicity coordinator left I have more work but I have a salary to go with that additional work and now that I can tone down the job search I can work on other important issues like giving their website a new look. Well I finally finished my homework for my PHP class last night. Just in time for the due date which is today. Pretty much all the examples the instructor gave on the website are either wrong or incomplete. Plus he has more than one version of how to do it wrong on the website and reading the forums he set up for communication are no help at all. Luckily for me I had a friend to turn to who knew PHP so I managed to finish it just in time. I swear I have to learn to write notes faster in class or take a hint from another guy in class who was taking digital photos of the board. Anyway, here are the fruits of my labors. It's pretty bare bones and funny looking right now but as the semester progresses that will change Current Mood: blank |

Things I like about myself I have been thinking lately, a lot of times we big women are bombarded by messages telling us that we aren't good enough unless we loose weight. Not good enough to be loved, not good enough to hold a job. You can't do that, you can't go there, you can't be this, blah, blah, blah. But let me stop there for a second. I don't want this to be just a rant about how these people all are wrong, suck and should die horribly in a fire. We already know and agree on this. What I want this to be about is you, yes you. I have an assignment for you all to counter these messages that have been told. I want you to list at least five things that you like about yourself and post them to your journal. You don't have to be a big woman like me, this is for EVERYBODY. It can be anything, doesn't matter how small it may seem. I'm not asking for some great, intelligent, mind altering, spirit awakening ideas here just five things you like about yourself. Feel free to add more if the mood suits you. I'll start 1.) I'm an intelligent person. 2.) People think I'm a nice, genuine person. 3.) I'm loyal to my friends, family and mate. 4.) I'm a good listener 5.) I'm a fast learner when it comes to cooking, software and hardware. 6.) I have a good constitution so I don't get sick very often. 7.) I have good hair Now once you have those things written out stew on those things instead of the bad stuff for a while Current Mood: contemplative |

Thanksgiving! Another Thanksgiving Day gone by another turkey coma gotten though. While I tried not to overstuff myself this was a rich thanksgiving indeed. Brinned lemon-garlic turkey, cornbread stuffing, giblet gravy, wasabi and green onion mashed potatoes, cranberry-apple sauce, sweet potato biscuits, sweet potato pie and pumpkin cheesecake. I personally was responsible for the cheesecake, potatoes and sauce. Plus I had made some cranberry muffins for breakfast so our day extended well before dinner. My brother brought a couple of movies and his two cats over so we had plenty of entertainment to distract us from the fact that we were hungry much of the time. I finally got to see the CG Transformers movie which in my opinion was just okay. It was neither extremely good or bad, just okay. Despite that I would call this Thanksgiving a success! ^^ Current Mood: full |

I baked cookies tonight! You know I think that baking is my second greatest love next to pencil and paper drawings. Not only are desserts delicious but around here it is one of those things I can do that few others in my family can do and get lots of compliments for it. Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't have gone to school to become a baker instead. After all, there is an old saying, never trust a skinny chef };=8) Current Mood: hyper |

Workplace Communication For those who I talk with on a regular basis and have been wondering where I vanished to I am buried in research and preparations for my first speech project for my Workplace Communication speech class. My topic: Weight Discrimination in the workplace. A project that I have to do hefty research for, an outline, a speech and decent visual aids for in the span of one week. Well less than a week now since I present on Thursday of this coming week. The second presenter on the first day.... I hate short deadlines like this. Current Mood: busy |

Horizons is Gifted It has to be gifted. After all it's been through with some moronic former owners *cough*EI Interactive*coughcough* and a major player exodus as a result of said former owners and someone hacking and messing up the website and yet it keeps on going. Of course it helps that the game no longer belongs to aformentioned former owners and was bought by three of the original developers under a company known as Vitrium. In the short time they have had the game they have done more good for the community and brought back more players than EI did in a year. They reactivated one of the lost servers, updated the client, got rid of some the database lag and are actually communicating with the community and answering support tickets. For the first time in a year I really have hope for the game. It really is a unique game worth playing. What other game can you play a dragon or build and own your own plot/lair that does not consist of one prefabbed inside of a building? It also has a pretty kickass player based economy where you can actually get your hands on some nice equipment without being maxed in levels first. In case you have no idea what I'm talking about go here.In other news I have modernized my computer and gotten a DVD-ROM for it. This was after I gave into peer pressure from Naril and Kess and Naril decided to get me Dawn of War/ Winter Assault/ Dark Crusade and I found I couldn't install it on my CD drive. Fortunately for them I did see the sense in bothering to go get one since hardly any software is released on CD nowadays anymore. The only problem I have had with it so far is not being able to get the black faceplate off to replace it with a beige one to match my computer but oh well. Guess who's hatchie day! Yup it was my hatchie day today. I'm one year older as of today. It's a far cry from the big celebrations of when I was a kid but hey I'm in my twenties now so I'm fine with quiet celebrations. I was particularly happy today because I didn't get a safeway cake today! My mom works at Safeway so it would have been easier for her to get one there but we went to a real bakery to get my cake and yes it was chocolate. I got a $50 giftcard from my brother, $50 bucks from my mom and a necklace from Amethyr and Kessedrian, my guildmate and mate. We also went to see the simpsons movie today which I say is the best animated film of the summer. I love the simpsons *sings* Spider pig, Spider pig, Does whatever a spider pig does... The Age of Fire Series For all the talk of Harry Potter, the new movie and the new book I have found myself far more interested in another series written by EE Knight called The Age of Fire. I've only read through the first installment, Dragon Champion, so far but I like what I see. The story is told from the dragon's perspective which itself is pretty rare and is anything but a happy go lucky fairytale as there is plenty of graphic violence all throughout the book. Fortunately EE Knight does not sacrifice story for gore as there is just as much world and character development. Though I didn't always agree with the way dragons were portrayed in some parts I could really enjoy it as a story. Here are the books if you are interested Dragon ChampionDragon AvengerDragon Outcast (not out yet) Current Mood: bookwormy |
